Cancun Beaches

The best stretches of beach are dominated by the big hotels in Cancun.
All of Mexico's beaches are public property. Visitors can use the beach of any hotel by walking through the lobby or directly onto the sand.

The undertow can be quite strong on beaches fronting the open Caribbean, so exercise special caution. By contrast, the Mujeres Bay (Bahía de Mujeres) waters, at the north end of the island, are usually calm and ideal for swimming.

Cancun Playa Caracol has a small but beautiful portion of public beach. It is located by the Xcaret Terminal. Playa Caracol faces the calm waters of Bahía de Mujeres. For swimming, it is preferable to the beaches facing the Caribbean.

Get to know Cancún has a water-safety flag system. Visitors should be sure to check the flag at any beach or hotel before entering the water.

The flags indicate the following conditions:

White: Excellent

Green: Normal (safe)

Yellow: Changeable, uncertain (use caution)

Black or Red: Unsafe(swim in the pool instead)

In the Caribbean, storms can make conditions  unsafe in a matter of minutes, so be alert. If dark clouds are coming, make for the shore and wait until the storm passes.

Some of the public beaches in Cancun are:

  • Playa Tortuga (Turtle Beach)
  • Playa Langosta (Lobster Beach)
  • Playa Linda (Pretty Beach
  • Playa Las Perlas (Beach of the Pearls)

At most Cancun beaches, visitors can:

  • Rent a sailboard and take lessons
  • Ride a parasail
  • Take part in in a variety of water sports
