It is one of the more quiet areas along the Riviera Maya, although it is growing, and there is a newer residential neighborhood north of the highway.
Designated a National Marine Park, Puerto Morelos provides sandy beaches, excellent snorkeling and diving, and attractions such as a botanical garden and a crocodile park.

Akumal is located just south of Puerto Aventuras, about 23 miles from Playa del Carmen and just under 15 miles to Tulum. Although Akumal was one of the first resort areas on the Riviera Maya, it is still a quiet place where much of the activity focuses on the beach and the water.
The main area of Akumal is where most of the tourist services are located, including a g rocery store with an ATM, money exchanges, a variety of accommodations, restaurants, and shops, two bays, and Yal-ku Lagoon. Further south are additional bays and beaches, local residences and individual resorts.
Snorkeling, diving, and other water activities are the most popular in Akumal. In addition the The Centro Ecological Akumal, an environmental education group, provides classes about turtles and leads tours of the nesting areas. Xel-Ha, a popular ecological park is less than 10 minutes away.
Tulum
Tulum is the furthest town south on the Riviera Maya. It is approximately 37 miles from Playa del Carmen and has become a very popular destination due in large part to the fantastic Mayan ruins located just north of town.
This Archeological Zone is home to the only Mayan ruins in Mexico located on the sea. In addition to the ruins, the park offers shops, restaurants, and nightly entertainment that is not to be missed.
In town, there are many more quaint restaurants with sidewalk seating, numerous shops, and other services including ATMs, gas stations, car rental and the bus terminal.
Accommodations in Tulum, this quiet town range from thatched cabanas on the beach to 5-star hotels.

In addition to the Tulum archeological site, the ruins of Coba are about 45 minutes away, and the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, covering over 1 million acres of protected jungle habitat, begins just south of town.
