The word Guadalajara comes from the term "Wad-al-hidjara", which means "a river that flows among the stones."  Guadalajara took this name from the native town of Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán, the conqueror of this land.

Considered one of the most important cities in Mexico, Guadalajara is found in the Valle de Atemajac, which means "a place where water forks" in Nahuatl (native language).

It is also the home of the Mexican hat dance and the place where the original mariachis began.  Mariachi musicians once played in groups with five or more instruments.
