Acapulco Mexico, Death-Defying High Divers

This is the quintessential Acapulco, Mexico experience. No visit is complete without watching the cliff divers. Even jaded travelers enjoy the divers. They perform at La Quebrada each day.

From a spot lit ledge on the cliffs, divers (holding torches for the final performance) plunge into the roaring surf of an inlet.
This inlet is just 7 m (20 ft) wide, 4 m (12 ft) deep, and 40 m (130 ft) below. They dive after praying at a nearby little shrine. As the crowd applauds, the divers climb up the rocks. Then they accept congratulations and gifts of money from onlookers.

Location: from downtown, a short 4-block walk along La Quebrada street from behind the cathedral

The public areas have great views of the divers. But visitors should arrive early. Spaces to watch the performances quickly fill up.

The cliff divers of Acapulco can also be watched from the lobby bar and restaurant terraces of the Hotel Plaza Las Glorias / El Mirador.
